Decoding the Jargon

Trigger

Also called Enrolment trigger, entry condition

AutomationTerm

The event or condition that starts an automation for a person, such as signing up, placing an order, leaving items in a cart or reaching a date.

Example

On Meera's website, the trigger 'items added to cart, no order within 1 hour' starts her abandoned cart email.

How you'll hear it

“The trigger fires on every page view, so people are getting the email three times; change it to once per cart.”

Don't confuse it with

  • Workflow: the full sequence of steps; the trigger is only how someone gets in.
  • Segment: a group you choose to send to; a trigger reacts to an action as it happens.
