The HTML <title> of a page. Google often uses it as the clickable headline (the 'title link') in results, but may rewrite it if it thinks another text describes the page better.
Example
Meera changes her category page title from 'Products | Meera' to 'Linen Kurtas for Women | Meera's, Pune'. It is now unique, clear and says what the page holds.
How you'll hear it
“Google is rewriting our title in results; probably because ours is stuffed with keywords.”
Don't confuse it with
- H1: the main heading visible on the page. The title tag sits in the page code and the browser tab; they can differ.
