HTML tags from H1 to H6 that mark the headings and sub-headings on a page, so readers and search engines can see its structure.
Example
Meera's care guide has one H1, 'How to care for linen clothes', and H2s for washing, drying and ironing. A reader can scan it in seconds.
How you'll hear it
“Make the H1 say what the page is about, and break the long text with proper H2s.”
Don't confuse it with
- Title tag: lives in the page code and the browser tab. The H1 is on the page itself.
- Heading order: Google's starter guide says using headings out of order does not matter for Search, though order helps screen-reader users.
