Decoding the Jargon

Opt-in

Also called Single opt-in, subscribe

AutomationTerm

The action a person takes to agree to receive your messages, such as ticking a box or submitting a sign-up form. With single opt-in, they are added as soon as they submit.

Example

At Meera's billing counter a tablet asks, 'Send me new arrivals by email?' with an unticked box. Customers who tick it are added to her list.

How you'll hear it

“Is that box pre-ticked? Then it isn't really an opt-in.”

Don't confuse it with

  • Double opt-in: adds a confirmation step by email before the person is added.
  • Opt-out: the person leaves later, for example by unsubscribing.

In India: Under India's DPDP Act, consent must come through a clear affirmative action, which a pre-ticked box does not provide. See Consent.
