Decoding the Jargon

Creator

Also called Content creator, influencer

Social mediaTerm

Someone who regularly makes and publishes content for an audience on a platform, often earning from it through brand deals, platform payouts or their own products. Instagram offers a separate creator account type with its own tools.

Example

A Pune fashion creator who posts daily styling Reels contacts Meera to feature her store in a 'local shops' series.

How you'll hear it

“Let's brief the creator on the product and let her script it in her own voice.”

Don't confuse it with

  • Influencer: overlaps heavily; ASCI defines an influencer by the power to affect purchase decisions, while creator stresses making content.
  • UGC creator: makes content for a brand to post, not necessarily for their own audience.
