Decoding the Jargon

Content pillar

Also called content theme, content bucket, pillar page

Content creationTerm

One of a few recurring themes your content is organised around. In SEO writing the term can also mean a long pillar page that links to related cluster articles.

Example

Meera uses three content pillars: office-wear styling, festive looks, and behind-the-scenes at the store. Each week's posts are drawn from these three, so her feed stays recognisable.

How you'll hear it

“This idea is fun, but which content pillar does it sit under?”

Don't confuse it with

  • Pillar page: an SEO page that anchors a topic cluster; social media teams use 'pillar' to mean a recurring theme. Ask which one is meant.
  • Content calendar: pillars are themes; the calendar schedules them.
