Search volume

Also called monthly search volume, MSV

SEODecision termCalculator

An estimate of how many times a keyword is searched in a month, usually averaged over a year. Google Keyword Planner and SEO tools show it as a rounded or bucketed figure.

Formula

Estimated monthly visits = search volume × the CTR you expect

Example

A keyword tool shows 5,000 searches a month for 'cotton kurta set'. If Meera's page earns a 4% click-through rate, that is about 200 visits a month. At a 2% purchase rate and her ₹2,000 average order value, those visits bring 4 orders, or ₹8,000 in sales.

How you'll hear it

“The volume looks big, but the people searching it want a marketplace, not a single store.”

What it helps you decide

Whether a keyword is worth a new page, and how much you can sensibly spend writing and promoting that page.

Where people misread it

People treat the figure as visits they will get. It is a rough yearly average of searches, tools group similar phrases together, and seasonal keywords can swing far above and below it. Ahrefs notes that search volume alone is an unreliable traffic predictor.

The story

Meera weighs one new page

A tool shows 5,000 monthly searches for 'cotton kurta set'. That number looks like 5,000 visitors. It is not.

What 5,000 searches turn into (illustrative)
Monthly searches5,000
Clicks to her page at a 4% CTR she expects200
Orders at a 2% purchase rate4
Sales at ₹2,000 per order₹8,000
Gross profit after 30% clothing cost₹5,600

A writer and photographer will charge ₹21,000 for the page. At ₹5,600 gross profit a month, that pays back in about 3.75 months, just under four, if the page reaches the position she assumed.

What the volume hides is who is searching. If the results page is full of marketplaces, her real CTR could be far below 4%. So she checks the SERP first, and she uses her own Search Console CTR for similar pages instead of guessing.

All figures are fictional and illustrative. Search volume is an estimate, not a forecast of your traffic.

Use your own Search Console CTR for similar pages where you can. Volume is a yearly average estimate from a tool.

Don't confuse it with

  • Traffic: volume is searches, not visits. Only a share of searchers click any result, and fewer click yours.
