A score from an SEO tool that estimates how hard it will be to reach the top 10 results for a keyword, mostly based on the links pointing to the pages already ranking. It is a third-party estimate; Google publishes no such score.
Example
Ahrefs-style tools may score 'kurta' as very hard and 'handloom cotton kurta Kothrud' as easy. Meera's young site has few links, so she starts with the easier, more specific phrases.
How you'll hear it
“KD is in the eighties and we have almost no links, so this is a year-two target, not this quarter.”
What it helps you decide
Which keywords to chase now, which to build towards over a year, and whether a keyword needs link-building on top of content.
Where people misread it
People compare KD scores across tools. Each tool uses its own formula and scale, so a 40 in one tool is not a 40 in another. KD also ignores how well your own site already covers the topic, which can make a hard keyword easier for you.
The story
Choosing where Meera's small site can win
Meera's website is six months old and has few sites linking to it. She compares two keywords in one tool (scores are fictional).
| 'kurta' monthly searches | very high |
| 'kurta' difficulty score | 85 (very hard) |
| 'handloom cotton kurta Pune' monthly searches | low |
| 'handloom cotton kurta Pune' difficulty score | 12 (very easy) |
The big keyword looks like the prize. But the pages ranking for it are national marketplaces with thousands of linking sites. She would spend a year and still sit on page three.
The small keyword has fewer searches, but the searcher is local and specific. Her shop sells exactly that. A good category page could reach the first page within months.
So she builds pages for ten such specific phrases first. As those pages earn links and sales, she has a stronger base for the harder terms later.
Difficulty scores and volumes here are illustrative. Every tool calculates KD differently; compare keywords within one tool, never across tools.
Don't confuse it with
- Search volume: how many people search. Difficulty: how hard it is to rank. A high-volume keyword can still be a poor bet.
- Domain Authority / Domain Rating: scores for a whole site; KD is for a single keyword.
