Decoding the Jargon

Gated content

Content creationTerm

Content that people can access only after they give their details, usually a name, email address or phone number, through a form. Ungated content is free to view.

Example

A Pune B2B software firm puts its 'Factory hiring cost calculator' behind a short form asking for name, company and work email. Sales then follows up with the people who downloaded it.

How you'll hear it

“Should we gate this report or let it travel freely?”

Don't confuse it with

  • Lead magnet: the lead magnet is the offer itself; gating is the decision to put it behind a form.
  • Paywalled content: requires payment, not just details.

In India: If you collect names, emails or phone numbers through a gate, India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies; say clearly what the data is for and get consent.
