Decoding the Jargon

Engagement

Also called Interactions, engagements

Social mediaTerm

Any action a person takes on your content: likes, comments, shares or sends, saves, replies, poll votes, profile taps or link clicks. Each platform counts a slightly different set.

Example

Meera's Reel gets 600 likes, 120 comments, 100 shares and 80 saves. Added up, that is 900 engagements.

How you'll hear it

“The post got good engagement, but most of it was people tagging friends for the giveaway.”

Don't confuse it with

  • Reach: how many people saw the post, whether or not they did anything.
  • Engagement rate: engagement divided by a base such as reach or followers.
