Decoding the Jargon

Distinctive brand assets

Also called brand assets, DBAs, distinctive assets

Content creationTerm

The non-name elements that make people recognise your brand instantly, such as a colour, logo, shape, character, sound, jingle or tagline. They are judged on fame (how many people link it to you) and uniqueness (how few link it to anyone else).

Example

Meera ends every Reel with the same three-note sound and a mustard-yellow tag with her store's name. After six months, regular followers say they recognise her posts before reading the caption.

How you'll hear it

“Keep the mustard tag in every ad; it's one of our few distinctive brand assets.”

Don't confuse it with

  • Brand identity: identity is everything you design; an element only becomes a distinctive asset once people actually link it to you.
  • USP: a reason to buy, not a recognition cue.
