Running different ad creatives against each other in a controlled way to learn which message, format or hook works better. A fair test changes one main thing and gives each version enough budget to reach a reliable result.
Example
Meera spends ₹10,000 each on three Reels for the same audience: an offer-led ad, a fit-story ad and a founder-talks ad. She compares purchases and revenue, then moves budget to the winner.
How you'll hear it
“Don't call a winner yet; four extra sales is noise at this budget.”
What it helps you decide
Which messages and formats get more budget, which get dropped, and what to brief next. Good creative testing also tells you why something worked, so the next brief is better.
Where people misread it
People declare winners on tiny numbers, change several things at once so they cannot tell what worked, or judge on cheap early signals like views rather than sales. Meta's A/B test tool estimates how likely the result would repeat; use it before deciding.
The story
Meera's three-way test (illustrative)
Meera tests three Reels, ₹10,000 each, same audience, same week. Average order is ₹2,000.
| A: offer-led, purchases | 10 |
| B: fit story, purchases | 14 |
| C: founder talks, purchases | 6 |
| A revenue | ₹20,000 |
| B revenue | ₹28,000 |
| C revenue | ₹12,000 |
| Total revenue on ₹30,000 spend | ₹60,000 |
|---|
B looks like the winner: ₹28,000 back on ₹10,000, against ₹20,000 for A.
What it hides: the gap between A and B is four purchases. At this size, a few buyers either way could flip the result. And A, B and C differ in hook, length and message all at once, so even if B wins, Meera does not know why.
What to look at instead: run B against A again with more budget, changing only the opening hook, and use Meta's A/B test so the platform reports how likely the result is to repeat. Drop C, which is clearly behind. Brief the next round on what B's opening did differently.
All figures are illustrative.
Don't confuse it with
- A/B test: a general method for comparing two versions; creative testing applies it to ad creatives.
- Dynamic creative: the platform mixes your assets automatically; useful for delivery, less clean for learning what worked.
