A small piece of data a website stores in your browser, used to remember things like a login, a cart or that you visited before. Analytics and ad tools use cookies to recognise returning visitors.
Example
When a visitor adds a dupatta to the cart on Meera's site and comes back the next day, a cookie lets the site remember the cart. If the visitor clears cookies, the site and her analytics treat them as a new visitor.
How you'll hear it
“Third-party cookie limits mean our retargeting audiences are shrinking.”
Don't confuse it with
- First-party cookie: set by the site you are on.
- Third-party cookie: set by another domain, such as an ad network, and increasingly blocked by browsers.
