Anchor text

Also called link text

SEOTerm

The visible, clickable words of a link. They tell people and Google what the linked page is about.

Example

'Shop linen kurtas' is better anchor text than 'click here', because it tells the reader and Google what the next page is.

How you'll hear it

“Change the 'read more' links to descriptive anchor text.”

Don't confuse it with

  • Alt text: describes an image. If an image is the link, its alt text plays the role of anchor text.
