Decoding the Jargon

CPC

Cost Per Click · Also called average CPC, actual CPC

Performance marketingDecision termCalculator

The amount you pay, on average, for each click on your ad. In Google Ads, average CPC is total cost divided by total clicks; the actual charge per click is often below your maximum bid.

Formula

CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks

Example

In one month Meera spends ₹40,000 on Google Search and gets 4,000 clicks, so her CPC is ₹40,000 ÷ 4,000 = ₹10. Those clicks bring 100 online orders, so each order costs ₹400 in ad spend.

How you'll hear it

“Search clicks are averaging ten rupees, but before we chase a cheaper click, let's see what each order costs.”

What it helps you decide

Whether to move money between campaigns, keywords or placements, and how high to set a maximum CPC bid. Read it next to the cost per order or lead it produces.

Where people misread it

Treating the lowest CPC as the best campaign. Cheap clicks often come from broad audiences or low-intent placements that rarely buy. CPC is an input cost; what you pay per order is the result.

The story

Separately from her usual monthly ads, Meera runs a two-week test of two new campaigns with ₹20,000 each. One is an Instagram traffic campaign to a broad audience. The other is a Google Search campaign on a few specific keywords.

Same spend, two campaigns
Spend per campaign₹20,000
Instagram clicks at ₹4 CPC5,000
Google Search clicks at ₹16 CPC1,250
Instagram online orders25
Google Search online orders50
Cost per order, Instagram vs Google₹800 vs ₹400

What looks right: the Instagram click costs a quarter of the Google click, so the instinct is to move the Google money to Instagram.

What it hides: the people clicking the ₹16 Search ad were already searching for what she sells. Twice as many of them bought. Each order from Search cost ₹400 against ₹800 from the cheap clicks.

What to look at instead: cost per order, or cost per lead, by campaign. Use CPC to understand why that cost moved, for example when competitors raise bids on the same keywords.

Work out your CPC and what each order costs

The example's numbers are filled in. Replace them with yours.

Compare campaigns on spend per order, then use CPC to explain why that number moved.

Orders are those you can trace to these clicks. Figures are illustrative.

Don't confuse it with

  • Max CPC bid: the most you are willing to pay; the CPC you are charged is usually lower.
  • CPA: cost per order or lead, not per click. A cheap click can still give an expensive order.
